The Department of Emergency and Protective Services is comprised of three sections that work together to provide for the protection of life, property and the environment.
- Fire Department
The fire and ambulance sections, a combined service, operate out of one station. The department is composite in nature having both career and volunteer members. The department is overseen by a chief and a deputy chief and has 18 full-time firefighters/EMRs, 6 dispatchers and 15 volunteer firefighters.
This is a busy department that in 2013 answered over 43,000 calls to dispatch, and responded to 1,860 incidents. The majority of incidents (1516) were ambulance-related, and 344 were fire-related. Since 2008, ambulance calls have been declining each year. Fire calls, unfortunatley, have been increasing. The City of Iqaluit is always looking to recruit new volunteer firefighters.
