Mayor Madeleine Redfern

Welcome to Iqaluit, Nunavut’s capital city, home to 8,000 residents, located just over 2000 km, due north of Ottawa, the Canadian capital.

Our city is well-served by two daily jet flights from Ottawa, and it takes approximately three hours. There are also flights from Montreal and Yellowknife three times a week. Iqaluit’s airport is the 20th busiest airport in Canada. It’s a true northern gateway for the territory and the Arctic, and also for transatlantic flights needing to refuel.

We host many visitors from the north and south throughout the year, including tourists, family or friends visiting, medical patients, as well as Canadian and world leaders. Iqaluit is the seat of the Nunavut Legislative Assembly, the headquarters for many departments of the Government of Nunavut and agencies, along with several key Inuit organizations, corporations and businesses that provide services to these key institutions situated in Iqaluit.

Iqaluit is also the cultural centre for Inuit of Canada’s Eastern Arctic, and also home for many non-Inuit from around the world. The City appreciates the need to ensure that Inuit culture is well reflected throughout the community, especially with signage and artwork. Our City has also benefitted by attracting professionals to work and serve both our own citizens and residents of Nunavut’s outlying communities.

It’s an exciting time for Iqaluit, and we are working hard to build a city that is attractive, robust and sustainable. We are optimistic about developing a liveable city with, of course, a resolve for fiscal responsibility.

Iqaluit is a proud community and we are taking positive steps toward beautification, developing a trail system, and beach front that is safe, accessible and where users can take in the breathtaking view of Frobisher Bay, whether in winter or summer.  You can also learn about our history and experience our culture at the visitor centre, museum and legislative assembly, all situated in the downtown core.

If you are planning to visit Iqaluit, move here or do business here our website is informative and will introduce you to our community. We are proud of our community, its residents and our position in the territory.

Qujannamiik (Thank you)
