City to begin Apex Cemetery remediation work, asks residents to collect memorial items

In preparation of site construction for the Apex Cemetery remediation project, the City is asking residents to collect personal and memorial items by July 26, 2021.

These include pictures, religious symbols, plastic flower arrangements, and other non-perishable items.
After July 26, the contractor will collect and store any remaining items. These items will be replaced after construction is completed this fall.

Anyone who would like to learn more about this request can speak directly with Mayor Kenny Bell and Community Communications Liaison, Ainiak Korgak. Please send your meeting request to Katrina Sarmiento at K.Sarmiento@iqaluit.ca or 867-979-5667.

The objective of this summer project is to raise and regrade the Apex Cemetery, providing positive drainage throughout the site towards a new dedicated ditch system along the limits of the cemetery.

The improvements are part of the Apex Cemetery remediation project to address site issues related to drainage problems, water in graves and adapting to a changing climate.
