Council Members Receive Portfolios
November 15, 2023 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The newly elected Iqaluit City council held their first meeting on November 14th, and the first item of business was to appoint a Deputy Mayor and committee chairs.

Kimberly Smith was appointed as the Deputy Mayor, as well as Chair of the Planning and Development Committee of the Whole.

Councillor Harry Flaherty was named as the Alternate Deputy Mayor, Chair of the Public Works and Engineering Committee of the Whole, and Chair of the Grievance Committee.

The Finance Committee of the Whole will be chaired by Councillor Kyle Sheppard, who will also chair the Taxi Review Committee.

Councillor Methusalah Kunuk was selected as Chair of the Community Economic Development Committee and as Chair of the Cemetery Committee.

Councillor Romeyn Stevenson will lead on both the Board of Revision and the Development Appeal Board. The Recreation Committee will have Councillor Sam Tilley as their Chair, and Mayor Solomon Awa will lead the Public Safety Committee.

The next City Council meeting is scheduled for 6:00 pm on November 28th.
