FIRE SAFETY AWARENESS FOR THE CITY OF IQALUIT –
AUGUST 16th, 2019 (IQALUIT, NUNAVUT) – Fires affect the whole of the community, from accidents in the workplace to fire hazards at home. The impact of fires can be devastating. Basic fire safety begins at home; a bit of planning can go a long way towards protecting yourself, your family, other residents and can prevent damage to the property.
Always ensure fuel is properly stored. It is always recommended to store in a detached garage or shed, away from heat sources and sunlight. Do not store fuel containers inside the house or in the trunk of a car. Please do not leave jerry cans and fuel where children can access them.
Only use fuel containers certified by an accredited certification organization such as the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or the Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC).
Please fill fuel tanks to 90% of its capacity to allow room for expansion. When filling the tank, always keep containers on the ground, with the dispensing nozzle in direct full contact with the container. This will prevent buildup and discharge of static electricity – which could be a source of ignition. When you are finished refilling the container, tighten both the fill and vent caps.
If you have any fuel such as gasoline or diesel that requires disposal, please contact the fire department for more information on safe disposal practices. Never pour gasoline onto the ground, sewers or into drains.
For questions on fuel containers, residents may visit the fire hall during regular business hours, Monday to Friday from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.
