IQALUIT FIRE DEPARTMENT PREVENTS LOSS OF THREE RESIDENTIAL UNITS
AUGUST 16, 2019 (IQALUIT, Nunavut) – At 7:00 pm on August 15, 2019, the Iqaluit Fire Department responded to building 174, a 4 plex, for a structure fire. Upon arrival the fire could be seen venting through the door and windows of the A unit. RCMP assisted with evacuation of the 3 remaining units while the Iqaluit Fire Department quickly knocked down the fire from the doorway and windows from the exterior.
The Fire Department responded with 14 members, 2 fire apparatus and 1 command unit. After initial knock down of the fire, the Fire Department entered the unit to complete extinguishment. The residents were not home at the time of the fire. There were no injuries and the Fire Department completed activities and the fire extinguishment within an hour.
The Iqaluit Fire Department would like to thank the RCMP and Municipal Enforcement for their assistance. They would also like to recognize the quick action of the career, volunteer and junior firefighters for their fast action in controlling the fire. The Iqaluit Fire Department’s quick response prevented the fire from spreading to the other three units and the residents of the neighbouring units were able to return to their homes. The Canadian Red Cross provided assistance to those affected by the fire.
