Iqaluit Fire Department Responds to Shack Fire on August 14

 

Just after midnight on August 14th, 2020, the Iqaluit Fire Department responded to a fire on the beach. On arrival, the Iqaluit fire crew consisting of ten (10) members, found one shack on fire with one (1) occupant. The crew quickly extinguished the fire and removed on male occupant from the structure and began to provide medical treatment. Ambulance brought the occupant to Qikiqtani General Hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The RCMP and the Office of the Fire Marshall assisted the scene and will be continuing with the investigation. At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown as is being investigated.

The Iqaluit Fire Department reminds residents to check that they safely store any flammable liquids, even in shacks and storage areas.
