Iqaluit Fire Department Responds to Shack Fires

May 28 2021 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

Around 9 p.m. on May 27th, 2021, six Iqaluit Emergency Services Staff responded to multiple shack fires at the beach behind Northmart.

The team consisting of two chief officers and four firefighters quickly extinguished the fire with one fire engine. The wind and construction of the shack contributed to a fast growth of fire that spread to adjacent shacks. In total, two shacks were completely burned down and two more shacks had started to catch on fire. The RCMP helped keep people away from the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fuel and gas stored in shacks pose a high risk of danger when there is a fire. It is important that people clear the area if they see a shack on fire. The City thanks the public for their cooperation.
