Post Blizzard Update – City Remains Closed
March 1, 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
10:30 AM - In the wake of the recent blizzard, the City would like to inform residents of the current
status of the City and efforts toward recovery. Please read the following updates carefully and adhere to
the guidelines provided, as they are for the safety of all and the expedited restoration of services.
City Facilities Closure: City facilities are closed for the afternoon. An update regarding the evening
schedules for recreation facilities will be issued by 5 PM.
Road Clearance Efforts: City heavy equipment crews have been active since 4 AM, working tirelessly to
clear the roads. The City has also enlisted the support of two additional contractors, to aid in these
efforts. The priority is to ensure that roads are cleared sufficiently to fully reestablish EMS and Fire
Department services, allow first responders to travel to and from work safely, and to prepare for the
reopening of trucked water and sewer services, as soon as possible.
Traffic Advisory: We are advising all residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. The
presence of more traffic at this time will only slow down the recovery process. It is imperative for the
efficiency of our operations that the roads are kept clear for emergency and recovery vehicles.
Trucked Services: Residents on trucked services are asked to conserve water.
Next Update: There will be another update posted at 5 PM today.
Acknowledgments The City would like to express thanks to all residents for your cooperation and
understanding during this clean-up operation. A special thank you is extended to all the first responders
and essential personnel across various organizations who have worked throughout the blizzard and with
the ongoing clean-up operation. Their dedication and hard work are crucial in returning the city to
normal operations as quickly as possible. Let’s all extend our gratitude to these individuals and teams for
their exceptional service.
