Water Treatment Plant Progress
Repairs to Iqaluit’s Water Treatment Plant are wrapping up. The contractors responsible for the work expect to recommend to the City of Iqaluit that we apply to the Government of Nunavut for permission to return to using the treatment plant as soon as the end of next week.
The City of Iqaluit has also hired a full time certified water treatment plant operator to supervise the facility and ensure that it operates as designed.
A full holistic inspection is almost finished, covering pumps and valves, mechanical functions, filters, the UV system and chlorination. This is being done out of an abundance of caution, since it has been over a year since the plant has been operational.
Water is being tested at positions throughout the water treatment plant, and the samples are being sent to a Southern lab for testing. The reservoir has also been disinfected and checked for bacteria.
When the water treatment plant is brought online, we do not expect there to be any noticeable change to the colour or taste of the water. There is a high likelihood that the Chief Public Health Officer will issue a precautionary boil water order. This is standard procedure, very similar to the PBWAs issued following short term water shutdowns.
The city will issue a PSA when the water treatment plant is fully operational and online.
