REMINDER: Use of Seatbelts and child restraint system in vehicle
March 29, 2022 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit would like to remind residents that as per the Nunavut Traffic Safety Act, as well as City of Iqaluit By-Law # 894 the Traffic Safety By-law, you are required to wear your seatbelt while operating a motor vehicle, whether you are a driver or a passenger.

Children also of the prescribed size or weight must be properly secured in a prescribed child restraint system.

Buckling up is the simplest thing you can do to protect yourself in a collision. Seatbelts help secure you in your vehicle in case a collision occurs. Using a seatbelt or restraint system reduces your chance you will be injured in a collision as well as decreases the severity of your injuries. The one second it takes to fasten your seatbelt could save your life.

Individuals in contravention are subject to a fine up to $125.00 for failure to wear seatbelt and up to $250.00 for child unsecure.

The City would like to thank residents for their support and understanding.
