State of Emergency – Extended to October 27, 2021
The Iqaluit City Council has extended the state of emergency due to the local water crisis effective as of 12 a.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2021.
During a City Council meeting on Tuesday, October 19, Council approved the extension of the state of emergency. CAO Amy Elgersma will continue to act as the Municipal Emergency Management Coordinator.
In a state of emergency, the Emergency Measures Act allows the City to "do any act and take any measure the municipal Corporation considers necessary".
The additional powers will:
• give the City additional powers to support compliance efforts, as needed;
• allow the City to take additional measures to support the vulnerable population outside of the existing support;
• ensure water security measures are in place for human health and hygiene.
As per the Act, the order is in effect for 7 days unless cancelled sooner or extended.
