Statement – Nunavut Black History Society's Solidarity Peaceful Demonstration

Mayor’s Statement on Nunavut Black History Society Solidarity Peaceful Demonstration

June 5, 2020 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

Our City staff expresses solidarity with everyone committed to identifying how we can make positive change for the Black, Indigenous, and other marginalised communities.

We have a strong and supportive community here in Iqaluit, but we must continue to listen and learn about racism, speak up, and take action for change.

With my privilege as a white northerner, I know that I cannot fully comprehend your experience as a black member of our community, but I hear you, I see you, and I support you.

At the City, we need to roll up our sleeves and get to work to build a system that goes beyond what exists now.

I thank everyone who joined the peaceful demonstration today to help us move forward and create an inclusive and safe society for all of us to live in.

Mayor Bell
