Statement from Mayor Bell

Keeping Our Community Clean

June 22nd, 2020 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

On behalf of all Council and Staff, the City is pleased to have once again see our residents, businesses, government, and organizations come together for this year’s Community Clean-up event. We thank you all for volunteering your time. By working together, we can keep our community clean, healthy and beautiful.

We encourage residents to keep the community clean all year round. Remind your friends and family members to put litter in garbage bins and pack out litter when on the land, ice and water. A clean City is good for our mental health, and it lets our waterways and wildlife thrive.

Businesses, we know you are proud of your company and the work you do that contributes to our developing City. We are asking you to manage the waste at your work sites, business locations and adjacent creeks and properties. Much of the debris in Iqaluit is from construction sites. It is very important to ensure materials on construction sites are properly stored.

I would like to extend a special thank you to the residents who go above and beyond by organizing their own community clean-ups throughout the year. You take leadership and show that you deeply care about the environment and your community.

We also thank our partners: the Government of Nunavut Department of Environment, WWF Canada, Unikkaarvik Visitors Centre, Iqaluit Masjid Mosque, and Arctic Survival for your support this year.

As the Capital City of Nunavut, let us all set a positive example and ensure no trash is left on the ground.
