PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

COVID-19 and City of Iqaluit Updates

March 13, 2020 (Iqaluit, Nunavut) – The City of Iqaluit’s first priority is its staff and residents.

The City is taking steps to protect the health and wellbeing of Iqaluimmuit.  While there are no confirmed cases in Nunavut, the City of Iqaluit has taken action in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to help ensure the community is protected from the risk of infection:

  • The City has launched a dedicated, internal task force to coordinate its prevention and response efforts. The 2020 COVID-19 Task Force will meet regularly to address issues and concerns affecting employees and the public;
  • Increased cleaning measures in all City facilities and workplaces, with a focus on disinfecting surfaces and touch points;
  • The City of Iqaluit has cancelled all not essential work travel, effective immediately;
  • City officials maintain regular communication with the Government of Nunavut's Health Department.  While the Department of Health is the lead organization for the COVID-19 pandemic, the City will support and follow Territorial initiatives.

Currently, City facilities and workplaces remain open however; some recreation programs are cancelled as a precautionary measure. For more information visit www.iqaluit.ca.

The City of Iqaluit is continuing to provide services until further notice.  The City is committed to providing essential services during the pandemic including water and sewer delivery, garbage pick up and emergency services (fire, ambulance, dispatch).   However, closing some City facilities, as a precaution, in the near future is a possibility.

Mayor Bell stated, “The City is actively monitoring and taking steps to help protect the health of the community, we are prepared to adapt and respond as the situation changes. It is important for residents to be aware of how to help to themselves and their families from the risk of exposure.”
