Drinking Water Update - City seeks assistance from the public, asks residents to report odor in drinking water
October 10, 2021 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City continues to investigate concerns from residents regarding reports of a fuel odor in the drinking water. The City of Iqaluit continues to investigate, test and monitor our drinking water daily. No water quality advisory is being issued at this time. Drinking water testing to date are satisfactory.
The City has retained the support of a consulting engineering firm and is working with Public Health officials. As part of the continuing investigation, additional testing and monitoring are underway. The City is tracking and mapping the locations where odor in the water has been reported.
The City is seeking assistance from residents, asking them to report the following information directly to the City (not via Social Media) if they notice and odor in the water.
- Building number
- Time and date that they smelled the odor (is it constant or intermittent)
- Description of the odor and any water quality description

Residents are reminded to be polite to City staff when reporting the requested information and other concerns. The City will not tolerate disrespectful comments directed to its staff.
Residents that are experiencing odor in the water should allow the water to run for 30 seconds which may reduce odors.
