Water Update – Car Wash Ban Lifted
September 24, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit would like to advise residents that the temporary ban on car washing is lifted, effective immediately.
This restriction was originally introduced to support water conservation during low-storage conditions at the Lake Geraldine Reservoir. Thanks to the strong conservation efforts by Iqalummiut, and the dedicated work of the City’s Public Works and Utilidor teams, who have been actively identifying and repairing leaks, water supply levels have now stabilized.
As of early September, the reservoir is operating above the spill level, and monitoring indicates a secure supply under a range of usage scenarios.
Residents can now enjoy washing their vehicles again, knowing that supply levels are secure. With stabilized reservoir levels and proactive monitoring in place, the City is confident in the stability of the water system going forward.
While the ban is lifted, the City encourages residents to continue practicing responsible water use. Your ongoing commitment to water stewardship will help ensure long-term sustainability and protect supply levels into the future.
Daily monitoring and weekly reporting of the reservoir will continue, and the City remains prepared to respond quickly if conditions change.
The City of Iqaluit thanks residents and businesses for their cooperation and commitment to responsible water use. Your efforts have made a real difference. This achievement demonstrates the positive impact of our community working together toward a shared goal. We also extend our sincere thanks to our Public Works staff for their hard work and dedication in helping restore stability to the water system.
