Honouring National Indigenous Veterans Day
November 8, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
On National Indigenous Veterans Day, the City of Iqaluit honours and remembers the Indigenous Peoples who have served in times of war, conflict and peace, from the War of 1812 to present-day missions.
We recognize the contributions of Inuit, First Nations and Métis veterans whose service has helped protect communities and uphold shared freedoms. Their actions represent a history of dedication and sacrifice that deserves greater awareness and recognition.
We especially acknowledge the service of Inuit veterans from across the North, many of whom served quietly and with humility. Their courage and commitment continue to inspire, even as their stories remain too often untold.
Today, we also recognize those who continue to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces, including Inuit and other Indigenous members, who carry forward this proud tradition of service.
Residents are encouraged to take a moment of silence, attend local commemorative events, or share stories of Indigenous veterans with younger generations to help keep their legacy alive.
As a community, we take this day to reflect on their sacrifices, honour their legacy and ensure their stories are remembered and passed on to future generations.
Lest we forget.
