Weathering Change – An Updated Approach to City Services during Inclement Weather Events
November 12, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit would like to inform residents of an important update regarding how we manage and communicate City services during severe weather events.

For many years, when weather conditions worsened and City Public Works vehicles were removed from the road, the City would issue a “Full City Closure.” This meant that City offices, services, and the roadways were closed, and the City effectively shut down until it was safe to resume operations.

The City will continue to use a phased approach to service levels during severe weather. A Full City Closure remains an available response, but it will be used only when significant operational disruption makes it necessary. This may occur during major snow accumulation events or when road conditions prevent safe cleanup and service delivery.

This change supports flexibility, safety, and informed choice while keeping our roads and communications clear and consistent.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of this series tomorrow, where we will explain what this means for residents and how you can stay updated during weather events.

To stay informed, we encourage all residents to follow the City of Iqaluit on Facebook and check www.iqaluit.ca for real-time updates.
