Iqaluit Fire Department Responds to Residential Fire

June 19th, 2020 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

At 5:00 AM on June 19th, 2020, the Iqaluit Fire Department responded to a fire at a unit in a multiplex in the 300’s. Iqaluit fire crews arrived quickly and the initial attack crews promptly contained the fire. One person was transported by ambulance to Qikiqtani General Hospital.

There were 13 firefighters on scene, with an engine, ladder, two medics and two support vehicles and one water truck. No injuries were sustained by firefighters.

The fire is being investigated with the assistance of the Office of the Fire Marshall who is working with the RCMP on the fire investigation.

Other units in that building suffered some smoke, and when appropriate will be turned over to the housing authority when the RCMP is able to release the scene.

Working smoke alarms in the units helped alert people to the fire quickly and allowed them to exit the building safely. This is a reminder for everyone to check the batteries and operation of their smoke alarms.
