June 10, 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit would like to remind residents that a burn permit is required for any open-flame outdoor fires.

Permit Application Process:

  1. Submission: Residents must complete and submit a burn permit application to Dispatch at dispatch@iqaluit.ca before starting a fire.
  2. Approval: Residents must wait to receive the approved burn permit back from Dispatch before having a fire.

Application Access:

Permit Specifics:

  • The burn permit applies only to open flame fires, such as bonfires and fire pits. Coleman stoves or lamps do not require a permit.
  • Only wood is permitted for burning. Burning tires, mattresses, or other non-wood materials is strictly prohibited.

Compliance:

  • If a fire is reported and no permit has been obtained, residents will be asked to extinguish the fire and will be informed about the permit requirement.
  • Residents may be charged for any fire department response and extinguishment required.
