Burn Permits and Bonfire Safety Reminder
June 12, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
As the warmer weather returns, many residents enjoy spending time outdoors with a bonfire. The City of Iqaluit reminds residents that all residential bonfires require a permit, issued by the Iqaluit Fire Department, to ensure fires are safe and in compliance with city regulations.
To maintain safety for everyone, bonfires must be contained in a fire pit, barrel, or ring, and placed at least 25 feet away from any structures, including homes, decks, or sheds. Only clean, dry wood is permitted—burning garbage, plastics, or treated wood is not allowed. Fires must never be left unattended, and a responsible adult must be present at all times. A water source, such as a hose or bucket, should be kept nearby in case the fire needs to be extinguished quickly.
Bonfires are not permitted during high wind conditions, typically when wind speeds exceed 15 km/h. Failure to follow these safety measures may result in fines or charges for emergency response services.
Please note that Coleman stoves and lamps do not require a permit, as they are considered enclosed and controlled sources of flame.
Residents can download a copy of the burn permit application at www.iqaluit.ca/content/burn-permit-0. Completed applications must be submitted to i.dispatch@iqaluit.ca for review and approval.
Thank you for helping to keep our community safe and enjoyable for everyone.
