Canadian Coast Guard Icebreaking Operations – June 28 and July 2, 2024
June 24, 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit would like to inform residents that the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Amundsen will be conducting icebreaking operations in or around Iqaluit on June 28, 2024. This operation is to assist with Woodward’s annual resupply. Following this, the CCGS Amundsen will escort M/V Kitikmeot W into Iqaluit on July 2, 2024, until ice conditions permit the vessel to proceed alone.
During this period, the icebreaker will leave an open water track. The Canadian Coast Guard advises residents to exercise caution when traveling in the bay and to remove any equipment and property from the ice in advance of these operations. Additionally, residents are requested to refrain from activities on the ice during this time.
Due to the nature of icebreaking, the ice can be pushed instead of broken, causing it to crack or break far from the location of the icebreaker. This can pose safety risks to people and property, so the public is urged to act with caution.
