City provides update on cabin construction
August 6, 2021 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City is providing an update on cabin construction in Iqaluit.

On October 27, 2020, council unanimously carried motion #20-339 to direct City staff to conduct background research, consultation and implementation of a Cabin Construction Program.

At this time, all cabin construction on Municipal Lands is unauthorized until the City finalizes cabin regulations and establishes a process for cabin approvals. The community will have an opportunity to provide feedback on this plan prior to final decisions made by Council.

Residents seeking permits to construct cabins, may explore opportunities on Federal Lands or Inuit Owned Lands. To acquire a Recreational Cabin Lease from Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC), contact the Lands Administration Office by email at landsmining@aandc-aadnc.gc.ca or by phone at 867-975-4283. To obtain permission to construct a cabin on Inuit Owned Land, contact Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) by email at registry@qia.ca or by phone at 1-800-667-2742. QIA also has an online application portal for cabins at https://apps.qia.ca/appform/.

A moratorium is in place for new cabin construction in Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park and Qaummaarviit Territorial Park. This moratorium will be lifted once a Management Plan for these Parks has been approved. For further inquiries regarding cabin construction in Territorial Parks, please contact parks@gov.nu.ca or 867-975-7700.
