Councillor Resigns Following Unanimous Vote

Councillor Malaiya Lucassie has resigned from city council following a unanimous vote by council on Tuesday, October 13th, 2020.

Councillor Romeyn Stevenson led the motion demanding the immediate resignation of councillor Malaiya Lucassie after Lucassie made racialized comments on social media last week. Councillor Simon Nattaq seconded the motion.

Statement from Councillor Romeyn Stevenson:

“The city council for the municipality of Iqaluit does not abide with the comments that were made by councillor Lucassie. The council does not condone racism or gender violence and does not accept a world where such comments, or comments such as those made over the weekend, are let go without censure. Councillor Lucassie breached the code of conduct. We as a governing body have a responsibility to act. This council officially reprimands councillor Lucassie. This council demands councillor Lucassie’s resignation effective immediately.”
