COVID-19 and City of Iqaluit Updates

March 14, 2020 (Iqaluit, Nunavut) – The City of Iqaluit’s first priority is its staff and residents. 

The City of Iqaluit continues to work closely with the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health to monitor and respond as needed to the COVID-19 situation. 

To help ensure the safety and well-being of our residents, changes to Recreation programs and facilities have been implemented, effective immediately.

Recreational Programs and Facilities

The City has cancelled the following group programs from March 15th to April 5th:

  • Elders Qammaq;
  • AWG Arena – all ice times cancelled;
  • Arnaitok Arena – all ice rentals for user groups, birthday parties and private rentals are cancelled;
  • Aquatic Centre – all group fitness classes including Aquafit are cancelled, birthday party and groups rental in the Northwestel Multi-purpose Room, public and family swims are cancelled.  The hot tub and saunas will be closed;
  • No new rental bookings for any Recreation Facility will be accepted during this timeframe;
  • City April Break Camps are cancelled.

The following programs and facilities remain open:

  • Youth Centre - regular hours;
  • Arnaitok Arena – Public and Family Skate times will continue and additional skate times will be added.  Note:  no more than 30 people will be admitted;
  • Aquatic Centre – all lane swims will continue and additional lane swims will be added, Iqaluit Breakers Swim Team and the National Lifeguard Certification course will continue. The Fitness Centre will remain open;
  • Curling Rink remains open for league play – no special events.

The City will reassess the cancellations and closures by April 5, 2020 and notify the public of any changes.

The City of Iqaluit continues to provide all other services until further notice. 

The City is committed to providing essential services during the pandemic including water and sewer delivery, garbage pick up and emergency services (fire, ambulance, dispatch).   However, closing additional City facilities, as a precaution, in the near future is a possibility.
