Fire Prevention Week – Safety Starts with Working Alarms

October 05, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit is proud to kick off Fire Prevention Week with this year’s theme: Charge Into Fire Safety — a reminder that small actions can make a big difference when it comes to preventing fires and protecting your household.

One of the most effective steps you can take is making sure your smoke alarms are in good working order. Install smoke alarms on every floor of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Test them regularly and replace batteries as needed. A working smoke alarm can provide the critical seconds needed to escape safely during a fire.

Make sure your household has a safe and warm meeting place nearby, such as a neighbour’s home or a vehicle. Keep outerwear like coats and boots stored near exits, so they can be grabbed quickly if you need to leave in an emergency.

This is the first in a week-long series of messages focused on fire safety in our homes and community. Stay tuned throughout the week for more practical tips to help keep you and your family safe.
