Fire Prevention Week: Charge Devices Properly

October 07, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

As Fire Prevention Week continues, the City of Iqaluit reminds residents that safe charging habits are an important part of fire prevention.

Always use the charger that came with your device, or one from a trusted brand approved for that specific product. Uncertified or mismatched chargers can overheat and increase the risk of fire.

Never charge devices on soft, combustible surfaces like beds, couches, or blankets. These materials can trap heat and ignite. Place devices on a hard, non-flammable surface while charging.

Keep charging devices away from flammable materials and never block exits with electronics or cords. If a fire does occur, clear pathways are critical for a safe escape.

Unplug chargers once the device is fully charged. This helps prevent overheating, reduces strain on the battery, and lowers the risk of fire.

Many households place devices near heat sources or drying areas, especially during colder months. Avoid charging electronics in these locations, as heat buildup and flammable surroundings can increase the risk of fire.

If a battery appears swollen, damaged, or unusually hot, stop using the device immediately and dispose of it safely.

More fire prevention tips will be shared throughout the week.
