Fire Prevention Week: Choose Safe, Certified Products
October 06, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

As Fire Prevention Week continues, the City of Iqaluit reminds residents that fire safety begins at the point of purchase.

When buying items that contain lithium-ion batteries, such as tools, toys, e-bikes, and other electronics, always check for a recognized Canadian certification mark, such as CSA, cUL, or ETL Canada. These marks are usually located on the product label, packaging, or power cord, and confirm the item has been tested to meet national safety standards.

Avoid purchasing cheap or uncertified knock-off devices. These products are often poorly made and can pose a serious risk of overheating, fire, or explosion.

If you already own an uncertified or damaged battery-powered device, stop using it immediately and dispose of it safely. The City of Iqaluit landfill accepts lithium-ion batteries and small electronic waste from residents only. Please notify landfill staff upon arrival to ensure proper handling and disposal.

More fire prevention tips will be shared throughout the week.
