COVID-19 and City of Iqaluit Updates
IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM THE CITY OF IQALUIT – Help us maintain efficient operation of
City services
March 19, 2020 (Iqaluit, Nunavut) – The City of Iqaluit’s first priority is its staff and residents.
The City of Iqaluit continues to work closely with the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health to monitor and respond as needed to the COVID-19 situation.
City of Iqaluit Maintains Operations with some changes:
The City of Iqaluit continues to maintain its operations, however a number of changes have been implemented:
- Recreation facilities are temporarily closed;
- City facilities are temporarily off limits to the public. Residents and businesses are asked to conduct business online, by phone or by email;
- Some staff will be working flexible hours or working from home.
The City is prioritizing its COVID-19 essential services including all water and waste water services, utilidor, sanitation services (garbage and landfill) roads and municipal enforcement, ambulance, dispatch and fire services.
The City is asking for cooperation from its residents to help maintain the efficient operation of its services.
Trucked services
Residents on Trucked Services must:
- Ensure driveways and access to their water intake and sewer pump out are clear and sanded as needed. Trucks will not deliver if access is restricted.
- Check your fill light bulb frequently to ensure it is working.
- Ensure water overflow pipe is free and clear of ice and ensure your lid is secured on your tank.
- Check the float inside your water tank.
City Sewer System
- Help keep our crews focused on service delivery. Never flush any type of wipes (including baby wipes, Lysol wipes etc), grease, tampons or anything else but pee, poo and toilet paper down the toilet.
- Clogging sewer lines due to non-flushables takes our staff away from essential service delivery.
This is a rapidly evolving situation; discussions and decisions are being made on an ongoing basis. Any changes in operations will be communicated and posted to the City of Iqaluit website at www.iqaluit.ca
