Iqaluit Emergency Services Responds to Structure Fire

On Sunday, January 16, 2022 at approximately 4:30PM, Iqaluit Emergency Services responded to a call regarding a kitchen fire in an apartment building in the 900 neighborhood.

Firefighters arrived and quickly located the fire and extinguished it ensuring no spread to neighboring units. A functioning fire alarm and sprinkler system in the building prevented this fire from escalating while providing the occupants, and their neighbours, enough to time safely evacuate the building.

The resulting fire and water damage was limited to only one unit resulting in two occupants having to be displaced.

Two firetrucks, one ambulance, and thirteen (13) firefighters responded to this incident with no injuries to the public or the staff at Iqaluit Emergency Services. The City of Iqaluit would also like to thank the Iqaluit RCMP for their assistance at this incident.

Iqaluit Emergency Services would like to remind residents that when they hear a fire alarm sounding in their building they should safely and efficiently evacuate the building. Once safely outside, residents should call 979-4422 to report the occurrence.

Remember, when exiting a room or building, closing the doors and leaving them unlocked slows the spread of fire and smoke, giving you more time to escape safely. This also allows firefighters to intervene quickly with the emergency and assist in searching the building for people who may not be able to get to safety on their own.
