Iqaluit Fire Department celebrates outstanding fire service
March 26, 2021 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit celebrated the outstanding fire service of Captain Walter Oliver and Firefighter Eegeesiak Aniqmiuq with a medal ceremony at the Fire Hall on Thursday, March 25, 2021.

Fire Marshal Ted Clouter and Fire Chief Geoff Spriggs presented the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal to Captain Walter Oliver and Firefighter Eegeesiak Aniqmiuq. This medal is achieved when someone has completed twenty years of dedicated fire service with good conduct.

“The saying that some are born leaders, could not be more fitting,” said Lieutenant Chris Wilson. “Walter has led the Association as President, acted as Deputy Fire Chief, Fire Chief and Captain.  These are titles, rank, and while Walter eschews accolades, at every turn he demonstrates and carries himself with a reflective calm, confidence, fairness and gives credit before he takes credit, that make such presentments all the more earned.”

“Many members in this department, past and present, see Eegee as a great source of knowledge, of this department, this city and its people,” said Lieutenant Sol Tagak. “Eegee’s long history in this City meant he knew almost all of our customers and their families, and was often a calming element on every call. It always amazed me that Eegee, speaking in Inuktitut or speaking assertively, could de-escalate almost every tense situation.”
