Iqaluit Fire Department responds to fire at Akausisarvik Facility
October 20, 2021 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
At approximately 8:00 a.m. yesterday morning, Iqaluit Emergency Services was dispatched to a building fire at the Akausisarvik Mental Health Facility – building 503. Twenty firefighters responded to the incident.
Firefighters found the exterior of the building on fire, however, only minimal damage to a window and some siding has been reported. The fire was quickly extinguished and there are no displaced occupants as a result of this fire. No injuries to staff or the public were reported.
The Iqaluit Emergency Services would like to thank all residents who were on the road this morning for quickly, but safely, moving to the side of the road to allow emergency vehicles quick access to the response.
Residents are reminded that after smoking, cigarette butts should be placed in a “butt can” or disposal unit. Cigarette butts should not be thrown on the ground as they pollute our land and waterways, and can easily spark a fire to dry or flammable materials.
