COVID-19 and City of Iqaluit Updates
Recreation Update – Partial Reopening of Outdoor Facilities
May 29, 2020 (Iqaluit, Nunavut)
The City of Iqaluit continues to work closely with the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health to monitor and respond as needed to the COVID-19 situation.
In light of the May 25th, 2020 announcement from the Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) regarding the relaxing of outdoor restrictions, the City of Iqaluit will be re-opening the following facilities commencing Monday, June 1st, 2020:
- All City-managed playgrounds in Apex, Happy Valley, Tundra Valley, Lower Base, Lower Iqaluit, Plateau and the Road to Nowhere
- Nakasuk basketball court and Plateau basketball court
- Apex Trail
- Rotary Park in Apex
- Tasiluliariaq Rotary Park in the Road to Nowhere
- Iqaluit Square
The City of Iqaluit encourages residents to remain active, get outside, and take advantage of the longer days and warmer weather. However, it is advised that residents use caution on the trails during the seasonal melt.
Though the risk of transmission is lower outdoors, we ask residents to continue to take precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. Residents are expected to adhere to the CPHO guidelines around physical distancing (approximately the width of a car), and ensure that they are not congregating in groups greater than 25 people.
The following City of Iqaluit Recreation Facilities will remain closed:
- Arctic Winter Games Complex
- Arnaitok Arena
- Aquatic Centre
- Curling Rink
- Elder’s Qammaq
- Makkuttukkuvik Youth Centre
The City will reassess the cancellations and closures by June 6th, 2020 and notify the public of any changes.
