Reminder to Remove Snow and Ice from Vehicles
November 26, 2025 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit reminds all drivers to remove snow, ice, and anything else that might block their view or fall off their vehicle before driving. This is required under City’s Traffic Bylaw 943 and the Nunavut Traffic Safety Act.
With winter now here, it is important to keep vehicles clear of snow and ice. Snow or ice left on your car can block your view or fly off and hit another vehicle or person. It creates a serious safety risk for everyone on the road.
Drivers must clear snow and ice from all windows and mirrors to maintain full visibility. The roof, hood, and trunk should also be cleared so loose snow does not slide down or blow off while driving. Do not forget the lights and license plate. These must always be visible. If snow, ice, or debris blocks your view or your plate, you could receive a fine of up to $250.
Before driving, make sure to:
• Start with the roof to prevent snow from falling onto your windshield.
• Clean all windows, mirrors, and lights so you can see and be seen.
• Clear the license plate so it can be read easily.
• Remove any ice buildup using a scraper or de-icer, especially around mirrors, wheels, and lights.
These small steps help protect you, your passengers, and others in the community.
