Snow and Ice Accumulation on Vehicles
October 28, 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit would like to inform its residents in respect to regulations under the Municipal Traffic Safety Bylaw 943, as well as the Nunavut Traffic Safety Act in regards to removing all accumulation of snow, ice or any other obstruction that may obstruct the view of the driver or become dislodged from any other part of the vehicle while in motion.

As the winter season is now here, so is the snow and ice, removal of such from your motor vehicle is imperative for the safety of other motorists and pedestrians on the roadway.

As snow and ice can obstruct the view of the driver or can become dislodged and then fall or fly from the vehicle posing a threat to other motorist or pedestrians using the roadway.

As per City of Iqaluit Traffic Safety Bylaw 943 s. 2.22 a driver shall remove snow, ice and any other obstruction from any part of window glass or any other part of a motor vehicle that may obstruct the driver’s view or become dislodged from the motor vehicle while in operation, fail to do so could result in a $250.00 fine.

In addition, your license plate must be free and clear of any obstruction, including a plate cover, snow, ice, dirt or any other debris. Failure to do so could result in a fine being issued under Municipal or Territorial law.

All of these requirements are for the safety of the passengers and those on and around the roads in Iqaluit.
