Snowmobile Safety and Reminders

The City would like to remind snowmobilers to use caution and follow safe driving practices
when operating a snowmobile this winter.

As per City By-Law 557, snowmobilers are required to be considerate and respectful of other
residents and private property. Please only use snowmobile trails that are clearly marked, as
outlined on the attached snowmobile trail map.

Please drive according to the weather conditions and keep a safe distance from other vehicles
or pedestrians. Drive on the right hand side of the road as close to the shoulder as reasonably
possible.

As indicated in the City Traffic Safety By-Law 894, the maximum allowable speed for
snowmobiles is 50 km per hour.

No person under the age of 14 years old shall operate an ATV or Snowmobile unless
accompanied by an adult.

To operate a snowmobile on any roadway or publicly accessed area, the driver must have valid
registration, insurance, and a properly displayed valid license plate. The driver and passengers
must wear a proper helmet.

Failure to comply to these City bylaws could lead to fines and have your snowmobile
impounded.

For hunting and other traditional purposes for accessing the land and sea ice, these
snowmobilers are exempt from the requirement to wear a helmet, and the requirement for
registration and insurance; however driver are to take the most direct route to access the land
and not commute on municipal roadways.

A snowmobile registration plate can be obtained from the City of Iqaluit by providing proof of
valid insurance and paying an annual fee of $25 for a registration certificate. In order to register
your snowmobile, you will require proof of insurance and ownership (a previous registration or

a bill of sale). All registration and payment can be completed at City Hall, building #901 during
regular business hours.

The City would like to thank snowmobilers for their support and understanding.
