Temporary Service Disruption – Arena Ice Maintenance

The City of Iqaluit would like to update residents on an ongoing equipment issue that is currently affecting ice maintenance operations at our local arenas.

As part of a preventative maintenance program, a routine inspection recently identified significant mechanical issues with two of the City’s three Zambonis. Only one unit remains operational, and as an electric model, it requires specialized charging equipment currently available only at the Arnaitok Arena. As a result, the City is temporarily able to maintain ice to standard only at a single arena.

To address this, the City is bringing in a new engine by air, which is expected to be delivered and installed within the next two weeks. Since ordering new equipment like Zambonis can involve lead times of over a year, this approach allows us to restore service more quickly. We anticipate that ice-resurfacing operations will begin returning to normal within the next two to three weeks.

In the interim, the City’s Recreation team is working directly with arena user groups to adjust schedules and ensure the continued delivery of recreational programming. Additional ice time will be offered at the Arnaitok Arena to help accommodate groups, and extra staff will be brought in to support extended facility hours and maintain a consistent level of service.

The City understands how important ice time is to the community and remains committed to minimizing disruptions. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all user groups and residents as we work to restore full capacity. As more information becomes available, the City will continue to provide timely updates to keep residents and user groups informed.
