THE CITY OF IQALUIT ANNOUNCES NEW

CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS

October 29, 2019 (Iqaluit, Nunavut) - The results for Iqaluit's newly elected Council members have been released.  Twenty-seven candidates ran for 8 positions on City Council. The City of Iqaluit’s new Council members (elect) are:  Janet Pitsiulaaq Brewster, Joanasie Akumalik, Solomon Awa, Romeyn Stevenson, Sheila Flaherty, Kyle Sheppard, Simon Nattaq and Malaiya Lucassie.                               

Last night, the new Mayor elect, Kenneth Bell was announced with 1049 votes, Noah Papatsie came in second with 688 votes. 

Iqaluit’s Mayor and Council will serve a four-year term ending October 2023.

The new Mayor and Council are expected to be sworn in at a ceremony on Tuesday, November 5 at the Nunavut Court of Justice. The inaugural council meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 12, 6:00PM at the Iqaluit Council Chambers.

Notice Regarding City Council Election:

An automatic administrative recount will be conducted on October 29.

A recount is required if the votes for the lowest winning candidate and the highest losing candidate are within 2% (including a tie), an automatic administrative recount will take place. All the polls will be recounted.
